What is SEO? It stands for Search Engine Optimization and it is the practice of getting websites to rank or be found on the first page of Google, Bing, and Yahoo. It applies to both Google Organic and Google My Business and involves a lot of tedious technical work such as directory submissions, link building, on page optimization, social signals, and press releases to name a few. For competitve niches like real estate, it can take months to get to the first page, while other niches could be much quicker.
When a person types in a search term that Google thinks has no local intent, or would not be associated with a bricks and mortar business it will show results that may be for the whole country or even the whole world. For example, if you typed “cats” into Google you probably wouldn’t get any results from Calgary. However, if you typed “Cats in Calgary“, all 10 results would be from Calgary.

Wheras, the search phrase “Flowers” could suggest you want to buy flowers, so you probably want at least some results that are from Calgary. Google can do this because they can identify the physical location of your computer or smart phone. When you take it further, “Calgary flowers” leaves no doubt to Google, so all of the results would be for Calgary businesses.
Why should you use search engine optimization (SEO) to get to the first page of Google?
- There could be thousands of people searching for your product or service
- Those people are ready to buy, whatever it is you are selling – if they search for a dentist, they probably need a dentist
- Cheaper than Pay per Click
- We can track how much traffic you are getting and give you a detailed report
